One of the most important aspects of the Osirys  project is to assess and to verify the technical performance of new materials based on forest biocomposites, and the best way to test this performance is to apply it on real construction sites For this reason, and considering the possible European climate situations, the project will provide two demonstrators, one in northern Europe and another one in southern Europe.

The southern Europe demo building will be developed by VISESA, the public housing corporation of the Basque Government, which is in charge of most of the social housing developments in the Basque Country. VISESA is committed to high quality and efficient construction to enhance quality of life of the housing occupants, and at the same time promotes new technical solutions and research activities, such as the Osirys project.  VISESA’s commitment in this project is to facilitate the installation of the new products in a typical social housing block that could represent the average housing standard in the country, and to monitor the performance of the products in real conditions at one of the apartments.

The selected social housing block is located in Donostia-San Sebastian, the second largest city and metropolitan area in the Basque Country with a total 326,000 inhabitants. The housing block is located in the central district of Morlans, where nine housing blocks and other public facilities have been built since 2005. This housing block will be erected in the last empty plot in the area.

The design project and building control was tendered in March 2015, incorporating in the tender documents the particular requirements of the building to accommodate the integration of Osirys products.

As a result of the tendering process, German Velazquez, VArquitectos  were commissioned in June 2015. The architecture team work started then and presented the final project detailing by the end of November 2015.

The building main characteristics are as follows:

  • Rectangular in shape (69 × 12 m)
  • 2 underground floors + ground floor + 7 floors + attic
  • 10 flats per floor (total of 70 flats)

The architect proposal includes a dark colour bond aluminium composite façade panel, and a bright colour aluminium corrugated sheet, as it can be observed in the following 3D visualizations.

The selected apartment to install the Osirys products has been selected on the south east corner, at second floor level. It comprises two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen & living room.

The details for the construction elements of the demo building have also been defined in the project by VArquitectos. Some of the details are presented in the next figures:

The building construction tender was published in December 2015, specifying the requirements of having to install the Osriys products in the selected building elements, and having to facilitate the monitoring activities planned.

LURGOIEN construction company was appointed as a result of the building construction tendering process in March 2016, and construction will start in April 2016.

Osriys project biocomposite materials are planned to be used in façades and in the interior partition walls, and monitoring activities are planned to be carried out in two different flats, a regular one and the one with the Osriys project material. This monitoring activity will allow comparison of air quality and emissions standards, and the calculation of the contribution of Osriys products to a healthier indoor environment.

Construction works started in May 2016 with the site preparation and the foundations, and is currently in progress.

Technical work has also progressed on the detailing of the OSIRYS products on the demo apartment. The details for the construction elements of the demo building which were defined in the project by VArquitectos, have been taken into account by ENAR and UN Studio for a good integration of the OSIRYS products.
