Indoor Air Quality Experimental Campaigns

Indoor air quality regarding OSIRYS panels is evaluated through experimental campaigns in the TECNALIA full-scale R&D test facility, KUBIK, located in the North of Spain.

KUBIK enables the evaluation of energy performance, acoustic performance, indoor air quality and air tightness evaluation of the scenarios built, taking into account the holistic interaction of the constructive solution for the envelope, the intelligent management of the climatisation and lighting systems and the supply of energy from non-renewable and renewable sources (wind power, solar, geothermic). The main distinctive feature of KUBIK is its capacity to create real scenarios where conditions are those seen in service. This means reproducing realistic configurations and user profiles in buildings.

Indoor air quality is assessed by the determination of the concentrations of selected air pollutants. The test strategy is a comparison of indoor air quality of the scenarios before and after the placement of OSIRYS products in the KUBIK ground floor. Two experimental campaigns will be performed: “Before” installation of the OSIRYS panels to determine the background air pollutant concentrations (already executed) and “After” installation OSIRYS panels to determine the air pollutant concentrations due to OSIRYS panels and the background. Concentration due to OSIRYS panels will be calculated by subtracting the background concentration from the concentration determined after placing OSIRYS panels.

The measured air pollutants were: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs); Formaldehyde; Acetaldehyde; Ozone (O3) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The sampling is performed with diffusive samplers with the ventilation either “on” (AER = 0.7 h-1) or “off” (AER = 0.123 h-1). The sampling is performed simultaneously indoors and outdoors. The outdoor sample is needed to identify and eliminate the air pollutants with outdoor origin. The sampling period is one week. The determination of the concentration of air pollutants is performed at IVL Laboratory, after sampling.
Outdoor concentration of NO2 and O3 are higher than the corresponding indoor concentration while indoor concentration of TVOC, Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde are higher than the corresponding outdoor concentration, in the “Before” Campaign in KUBIK. Additionally, indoor TVOC and Acetaldehyde concentrations without ventilation were nearly double than indoor concentrations with ventilation, while indoor Formaldehyde concentration without ventilation is 30% higher than indoor concentrations with ventilation.
