Forest based composites for façades and interior partitions to improve indoor air quality in new builds and restoration

Amorim Cork Composites SA

With basis on the traditional European Cork industry, Amorim Cork Composites (ACC) SA has been a leader company on innovative applications using cork, inside the Amorim Group. The Amorim Group has 130 years of existence with a consolidated turnover of more than 480 mil Euros. ACC with 7 industrial sites has a turnover of more than 76 mil Euros achieved by developing, producing and selling semi-finished cork base materials in diverse sectors. ACC produce and supplies worldwide cork base materials for the industrial and building sectors. In some markets like the construction, produces and supplies specific building products to renamed DIY, retail and distributors. Traditional uses of cork base materials on the construction sector are, mostly, due to its thermal and acoustical insulation.

All the new applications and processes of cork are study and initiated inside the company by a team of research engineers and a well-equipped laboratory.

Since the cork is a natural and renewable material that is the bark of the Oak cork trees (Quercus Suber) an indigenous south European tree that is harvested at each 9 years, their business promotes the sustainable management of these forests, located especially in Portugal, Spain, southern France and Italy.

ACC has been involved with several funding projects, since national to international research and development projects.

The most relevant are:

  • 7FP: FIRE-RESIST – Developing Novel Fire-resistant High Performance Composites
  • 7FP: BIOBUILD – Developing cork-based core materials that can provide structural performance in a sandwich panel, combined with both thermal and acoustic insulation, for use in conjunction with biocomposite skins.
  • National level: QREN- Wallinblock – self-sustaining and high performance walls ACC has also been actively involved with National, European and American organizations related with ECO-building concepts.

Role in the project

It will develop the eco-innovative cork base panels at lab scale in WP4 and up-scaling in WP7.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 609067.
